The Best Yet by Steve Consalvez

It’s taken 25 years, but finally there’s a formula for success, says UK certifying firewalking instructor trainer Steve Consalvez

I have been to many personal development shows over the years, some larger, some smaller and having been both a recipient of personal development and an agent of personal development, I have seen how this industry has grown.

I remember when the Anglo American Book Company, run by Martin and Glynis Roberts, was a tiny outfit, operated from a small shop somewhere in Wales, and now they are world-class. It was great to see them at the inaugural The Best You Expo.

But actually, their success is why I think that Bernardo Moya is going to make this not only work, but become the ‘go-to’ place for the searchers of happiness and success of tomorrow. From when I first met Bernardo, I saw both the entrepreneur and the visionary.

Of course, he needs his endeavours to make a return on investment, but having been through a journey himself, he now has personal development at his heart.

This is why Anglo American is a market leader. Glynis and Martin had NLP at a very deep level ‘in their hearts’. Back in 1991-2, when you could only get quality NLP training from four organisations in the UK, they were always there, and for the connoisseurs of language or Erickson, Gestalt or Satir, they had products that you couldn’t get elsewhere (I still have Milton Erickson videos). They had passion, belief, commitment and longevity. And I think that’s what this kind of success requires: deep excavation. I think Bernardo has that and I’m all for it.

Twenty-five years ago, when I first started selling personal development books, tapes, videos and courses, the biggest challenge we had is the same challenge we face today: complacency. People want lots of change in their lives, but they just don’t want to put in the effort. Events like The Best You Expo provide a window of opportunity for these seekers, so that they can pick something that resonates with them to help them on their journey.

For us, as a small company that specialises in only two things, company profit building, and personal confidence building and training, our fairly high ticket pricing, means that it is unlikely to sell direct from the stand. However, on this occasion we sold a couple of places, so we were delighted that this was able to contribute to our investment.

As a niche provider though, perhaps the biggest impact is the media impact.

As a presenter, I was able to demonstrate to a room of approaching 100 people my findings from 29 years of personal development, which include the edgy suggestion that “You can decide EXACTLY how you feel about ANYTHING”.

Many people were just there to witness me pushing a 5” haberdashery needle through my hand while I experienced bliss, but the message was clearly understood.

“Most people really want to change how they FEEL about some aspect of their lives, so that they can accept it, forget it or change it.”

And The Best You Expo proved a good environment to get that across.

We had many fantastic conversations from the stand and with the other exhibitors. It was great to see Janey Lee Grace again, who had a stand, and it was good to see some of the professional keynote speakers from my past work with a public speaking bureau. I look forward to seeing their presentations as well as my own.

This is going to grow and grow because Bernardo’s vision is behind it, and I am certain that next year, it may be three to four times the size, so something that companies like ours will want to continue to support.
